By the end of June this year, I had the fun opportunity to share some of my research on the charismatic “Candelabra Aloes” for which the Mpushini Valley is renowned. I presented data I collected, both in 2017 and 2018, with PhD student Miguel Castañeda-Zárate to answer the question of: “Why are honeybees such poor pollinator of Aloe ferox, despite being frequent visitors”.
I gave the talk in the midst of the Aloe nursery at the Mpushini Valley which not only was the perfect setting for a talk about the pollination of Aloe ferox, but was also meters away from the site where the data was collected. The latter, conveyed me special satisfaction on my job of 'reaching out to the local community'. The Lower Mpushini Valley Conservancy organizes these events each year with talks and activities to raise funds for the conservancy of the Mpushini Valley.
